Sales and Trading intern at CIBC | Day in the Life

RECAP!

  1. Please introduce yourself, and what did you do over the summer?

3rd year at Rotman Commerce, worked as a CIBC S&T analyst at CIBC world markets. There are multiple divisions under the S&T, and I worked in the Canadian government credit strategy, which is under the bigger umbrella of FICC strategy. That stands for fixed income, currency and commodities.

  1. What does your deck do in general?

My desk is focusing on research. We create research for both internal and external clients. Other desks use this research to provide trading solutions and other ideas to their clients.

  1. How do you contribute to the team as an intern?

I worked on many different research reports, especially on bond issuers in Canada, ranging from federal government issuers, municipal issuers, and pension funds. We also worked with other teams to develop different types of research that we can put out. The majority of them have made templates, so I just need to update them. But if there is a particular event we need to disclose, I need to write basically what I think and work with my team to come up with research to put out.

  1. What platform did you use in making reports?

We used Bloomberg particularly, and I did most graphing and analysis in Excel. I also use capital IQ and other data from rating agencies. Besides, I check the Bank of Canada website, and if there is something I cannot find, I need to contact the issuer directly to get the data that is not disclosed on their website.

  1. Talk about your schedule?

Work from 8-5 so the hours are pretty good. Sometimes I have specific deadlines I need to meet. To cope with that, I make sure I allocate my time wisely and focus on what’s more important.

  1. What do you like/dislike the most about the job?

I learn a lot. Especially when working with Canadian issuers, I learn a lot about what is currently going on in finance and capital markets by doing all these researches. What I dislike is that the work is not that fast-paced as other jobs. But I also like the good work-life balance.

  1. Give the last piece of advice for students in your deck in the future?

Make sure you do lots of research, and you need to know what’s going on and well-rounded knowledge of current events.
